Hi fellow Fellows! I thought I'd start the ball rolling. My project this summer with the League of Education Voters is a survey and analysis of major CBAs in Washington state. I'm finding some really interesting things such as: - When laying off teachers for lack of funds, the usual order for choosing teachers for dismissal is A) difficulty in staffing the position (SpEd, math, etc) B)years in the classroom, C) years of education then D) either coin toss or "casting lots." Nowhere is teacher effectiveness or student achievement mentioned.
- Most CBAs heavily mandate planning time but only two thus far have given any mention of how much time should be spent in instruction.
Is anyone else working on CBAs/bargaining/contracts? Other questions/ideas you have in this realm?
